How to Convert CGPA to GPA (4.0 Scale)?

To convert your Indian CGPA to a US-style 4.0 GPA, first convert CGPA to percentage using the standard formula, then scale it to 4.0:

Percentage = CGPA ร— 9.5 GPA (4.0) = (Percentage รท 100) ร— 4

Example: CGPA 8.5 โ†’ Percentage = 8.5 ร— 9.5 = 80.75% โ†’ GPA = (80.75/100) ร— 4 = 3.23 / 4.0.

Important Note for University Applications

Different credential evaluation agencies (WES, ECE, IQAS) may use slightly different conversion methodologies. Many US universities also accept your CGPA directly alongside an explanation of the Indian grading scale, rather than requiring conversion. Always check your target university's specific requirements before submitting a self-converted GPA.

CGPA to GPA FAQs

8.5 CGPA = 80.75% = 3.23 GPA on the 4.0 scale (standard proportional method).
9.0 CGPA = 85.5% = approximately 3.42 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Not always โ€” many universities accept your CGPA with a grading scale explanation. Some require WES or similar evaluation services which use their own conversion formulas.
This calculator uses the standard proportional method. WES and other evaluators may apply institution-specific or country-specific conversion tables, so results can vary slightly โ€” always check with the official evaluating body for formal submissions.
Most US universities require a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 (equivalent to roughly 75% or 7.9 CGPA) for Master's admission, though competitive programs often expect 3.5+.
